Lens Performance

Transitions Drivewear lenses are the ultimate in intelligent sun lenses. The polarized photochromic lenses ingeniously sense and react to the wearer’s current daytime conditions, changing as the conditions change. Sensing the amount of light available during the day, the sun lenses change both COLOUR and DARKNESS to provide the best vision and comfort, no matter the time of the day, whether outdoors or driving. Transitions Drivewear is the world’s only sunglass lens that changes to THREE different colours while also darkening and lightening. The result is optimal outdoor vision – whatever the conditions - allowing wearers to see more of their world with vibrancy, enhanced contrast and excellent depth perception, while blocking glare that can seriously compromise vision. Transitions Drivewear sun lenses uniquely combine two of the most advanced technologies found in the ophthalmic lens industry today: NuPolar® polarization and Transitions® photo-chromic technology. It is the world’s only photochromic polarized sun lens that also reacts to visible light and darkens behind the car windscreen. The lenses are available in a wide range of prescriptions in high impact Trilogy® Trivex® material and polycarbonate, along with 1.50 hard resin. Plano Transitions Drivewear lenses are also available to be fitted into patients’ own frames or in ready-made exclusive high quality Drivewear sunglass frames.
Bright Sunlight
Dark Brown Colour – Darkest tint
Designed for maximum filtration of excess light so the eye does not get saturated. Transitions Drivewear change to a dark brown colour while the tint darkens to its darkest state at 90% tint. The darker brown colour provides maximum protection from intense sunlight and the polarization truly blocks blinding glare. The brown lens colour enables excellent colour recognition with a special emphasis on highlighting greens; green is the most common colour in the natural landscape thereby providing a rewarding and vibrant visual experience.

Daylight Driving
Copper Colour – Light to Dark Tint

Car windscreens block nearly 100% of UV light. Most photochromic lenses will not darken behind the windscreen because the photochromic dyes are activated by UV light. However, Transitions Drivewear uniquely reacts to both UV and visual light meaning it darkens behind the windscreen. In the car with the absence of UV light, the depth of the copper colour is dependent upon the amount of visible light the wearer is exposed to when driving at that time of day.

The copper colour is designed to remove excess light and to
provide improved depth perception, while highlighting reds and greens for excellent traffic signal recognition. Depending on the current daylight conditions, the lens tint darkens or lightens to control the amount of light reaching the eye – up to 75% tint. The polarization blocks dangerous blinding glare such as that coming off smooth shiny objects and wet surfaces.
Overcast / Low Light Conditions
Olive Colour – Lightest tint
Designed to maximise useful light information reaching the eye. Transitions Drivewear changes to an olive colour to provide much needed high contrast in low light conditions. The lens tint lightens to 63% tint allowing wearers to see more of their world. The polarization removes glare such as that from wet surfaces or smooth shiny objects that would otherwise compromise vision in overcast or low light conditions.

Polarization Technology

The polarization technology of Transitions Drivewear lenses represents a significant breakthrough in the use of polarization. Typically, efficient polarization by absorption only occurs when large quantities of absorbers are present. But this high efficiency polarization makes the lens very dark. While this is desirable for the times when there is bright sunlight, it does not address lower light conditions, particularly during overcast weather.

Transitions Drivewear lenses feature a high efficiency polarizing filter that blocks the bad light (glare) and lets the maximum amount of good light pass through the lens. This high light transmission was only achieved by pushing polarized manufacturing technologies to new levels of exceptional performance.

Photochromic Technology

The photochromic properties of Transitions Drivewear lenses offer a significant advancement over conventional photochromics, which typically react only to UV light exposure. Car windscreens block UV light, so conventional photochromic lenses do not darken inside the car. Younger Optics teamed up with Transitions Optical to develop special UV and visible light sensitive photochromic dyes enabling Transitions Drivewear lenses to darken inside the car.

Combining NuPolar® and Transitions® Technologies

Transitions Drivewear lenses use advances in Transitions photochromic technology and breakthroughs in Younger Optics’ NuPolar polarizing technology to Other attempts have been made to combine polarization and photochromics. These attempts did not succeed because the properties of the lens were not designed specifically to make the two technologies work together in a complimentary and synergistic way.

Transitions Drivewear lenses go beyond these initial attempts by using each of these specific technologies in ways that enhance each one’s capabilities. Transitions Drivewear’s combination of technologies is so advanced and novel that several countries have recognised the innovation by granting a patent on the product.
